    Abstract
    Ein grundsätzliches Problem der Literaturverwaltung besteht darin, daß viele Nutzer der Retrievalsysteme gar nicht genau sagen können, was sie suchen. Erst im Prozeß des erkundenden Suchens lernen sie genauer zu präzisieren, was sie finden wollen. Dieser Lernprozeß wird durch einzelne Suchwörter (Suchwortketten) nur unzureichend unterstützt, weshalb der benutzer häufig unzufrieden mit dem Ergebnis eines solchen Suchprozesses ist. Notwendig sind reichhaltigere Begriffsnetze, die thematisch geordnete Zusammenhänge darstellen und sich flexibel verfeinern, vergröbern oder verändern lassen, um in geeignetem Umfang die wünschenswerte Orientierung liefern zu können.     Abstract
    Ziel der US-amerikanischen TREC (Texte REtrieval Conference) Initiative ist es, zum einen Standard-Kollektionen von Teten zu erstellen, auf deren Basis verschiedene Retrieval-Ansätze verglichen werden können. Zum anderen sollen Kollektionen einer Grösse aufgebaut werden, die realistischen Anwendungen nahe kommen. Damit soll das alte Vorurteil der Untauglichkeit neuerer IR-Methoden (bzgl. Effizienz und Effektivität) für größere Darenbasen widerlegt werden.

    Das immer populärer werdende WWW wird als multimedialer Teil des Internet bezeichnet. Dabei wird häufig übersehen, daß Multimedia nichts weiter ist als ein digitaler elektronischer Medienverbund. Erst durch Hypertext-Technologie wird das Internet als Multimedia-Anwendung interessant, erst die Hypertext-Technologie ermöglicht die Reise um die Welt mittels Mausklick.     Abstract
    Ein überfordertes Gutachter-System, knapper fließende Forschungsgelder sowie die starke Faszination von Ranglisten bewirken zunehmend den Einsatz bibliometrischer Methoden zur Messung von Forschungsqualität. Grundlage der meisten Bewertungen ist der Science Citation Index, der nun auch in der Version als Online-Datenbank für umfangreiche Analysen genutzt werden kann. Erweiterungen der Retrievalsprache beim Host STN International ermöglichen statistische Analysen, die bisher nur dem SCI-Hersteller und wenigen Spezialisten vorbehalten waren. Voraussetzung für eine sinnvolle Anwendung sind vor allem die Wahl geeigneter Selektionskriterien sowie die sorgfältige Interpretation der Ergebnisse im Rahmen der Grenzen dieser Methoden
