    Abstract
    The Australian Bibliographic Network (ABN) and Ozline service supports national access to Australian and overseas materials. The national CJK service provides access to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language materials. In 1992 it was decided to develop a new system in cooperation with the New Zealand National Library to replace ABN, NZBN, Ozline and Kiwinet through the National Document and Information Service project. The 1st stage will be implemeneted in 1997. In Australia, the new service will be marketed und the name WORLD1. Describes the model followed, and the WORL1 architecture. The new system will be an open-client-server system, capable of interfacing with Internet services and accessible through WWW clients

    Abstract
    Presents an overview of the development of the mathematical literature up to the founding of Mathematical Reviews in 1940. A brief history of mathematical communication is given including discussion of academies, amthematical societies and the early periodicals published by these groups. Describes the emergence of the mathematical reviewing periodicals, the most important of which was the 'Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik', founded in 1868. By the late 1920s there was widespread dissatisfaction with the Jahrbuch and in 1931 a new reviewing periodical called 'Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete' began publication. Discusses the background to the publishing of the first issue of 'Mathematical Reviews' in January 1940 and provides tables indicating the growth of mathematical literature 1940-1989

    Abstract
    Ohne Suchmaschinen ist das WWW kaum noch die Hälfte wert. die Crux mit den Suchmaschinen kennt trotzdem jeder: Entweder das Gesuchte ist auf der gewählten Suchmaschine (zufällig?) gerade nicht erfaßt, oder Suchende werden von der Menge des Gefundenen 'erschlagen' - wesentlich mehr als 100 'Treffer' sind sinnlos, da unüberschaubar. Die Forderungen an eine hochwertige Suche müssen daher heißen: Die Suchmaschine muß ein definiertes Gebiet vollständig absuchen, und die Ergebnisse müssen für Suchende qualitativ hochwertig sein. Das vollständige Absuchen darf dabei trotzdem nicht zu unüberschaubar langen Trefferlisten führen. Die Kombination dieser beiden Forderungen wird in einem Teilbereich des DFN-Expo Projektes unter dem Stichwort 'Level3' untersucht. Level3 erlaubt die Generierung spezieller Suchmaschinen für definierte, thematisch eingegrenzte Sachgebiete

    Abstract
    In diesem Beitrag wird eine szientometrische Studie zum Informationsmanagement vorgestellt. Unter Verwendung von Science Citation Index und Social Science Citation Index wurde die Literatur zum Informationsmanagement nach verschiedenen Kriterien (Fachgruppen, in denen publiziert wird; Herkunft der Autoren; Publikationssprachen; zeitliche Verteilung) ausgewertet. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Zitatenanalyse durchgeführt. Auf Basis einer Autoren-Kozitationsanalyse wurde schließlich die formale Wissenschaftskommunikation im Bereich des Informationsmanagements abgebildet. Neben den Ergebnissen werden aber auch die Problembereiche aufgezeigt, die mit szientometrischen Untersuchungen verbunden sind

    Abstract
    Einer der faszinierendsten Aspekte der menschlichen visuellen Wahrnehmung ist die Fähigkeit, die Bilder der beiden Augen zu einem einheitlichen, räumlichen Wahrnehmungseindruck zu verschmelzen - einem Eindruck, bei dem Gegenstände sich plastisch von ihrem Hintergrund "abheben". Diese scheinbar mühelose Leistung erfordert ein einwandfreies visuelles Angebot in früher Kindheit. Störungen der Sehfähigkeit bei Babys und Kleinkindern, z. B. durch ungleiche Brechkraft der beiden Augen (Anisometropie), lichtundurchlässige Augenmedien aufgrund hängender Augenlider (Ptosis) oder angeborene Linsentrübung (Katarakt) können zu einem irreversiblen Verlust der Sehkraft auf einem oder beiden Augen führen. Fachleute sprechen in diesem Fall von Amblyopie, was soviel bedeutet wie "dumpfes Sehen"

    Abstract
    Die Bibliothek der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) erfüllt eine Doppelfunktion. Zum einen fungiert sie als Hauptbibliothek der ETH Zürich und darüber hinaus übernimmt sie die Funktion eines naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Informationszentrums für die Schweiz. Bei der Einführung neuer Technologien im Schweizer Bibliothekswesen übernimmt die ETH-Bibliothek zudem traditionell eine Führungsrolle. Vor diesem Hintergrund betrachtet, erstaunt es nicht, dass sich die ETH-Bibliothek seit geraumer Zeit damit befasst, wie Dissertationen elektronisch zur Verfügung gestellt werden können. In der Promotionsordnung der ETH Zürich ist die elektronische Abgabe einer Dissertation bisher nicht vorgesehen. Allerdings müssen die Promovierenden lediglich acht Exemplare ihrer Arbeit abgeben

    Abstract
    Bereits im Jahr 1980 brachte das Informationszentrum Sozialwissenschaften in Bonn (im folgenden IZ genannt) seine erste soziologische Bibliographie heraus, die damals noch auf fremdem Ausgangsmaterial basierte. Während der Aufbau der Literaturdatenbank SOLIS (Sozialwissenschaftliches Literaturinformationssystem) in den folgenden Jahren im Vordergrund der Tätigkeit des IZ stand, geriet der Gedanke, dieser ersten Bibliographie weitere folgen zu lassen, nie ganz in Vergessenheit. Nachdem nunmehr fast 20 Jahre vergangen sind, ist das Projekt in die Realisierungsphase gerückt und der Prototyp für eine Reihe weiterer soziologischer Bibliographien, die zeitlich an die obengenannte anschließen, bereits entwickelt.
