Abstract

In a democratic system, the preservation of the archival heritage is designed to facilitate the understanding and control of the activities of public bodies and needs to be safeguarded. In recent years some progress has been made in archival legislation. However, archives continue to exercise only a marginal influence on records management, and are being faced with new problems as a result of office modernisation. Argues that in this situation it is important for archives to take responsibility for records outside the official government remit, as in a pluralistic society there is a general public interest in them
