Abstract
Er war eines der größten Genies des 20. Jahrhunderts, der Vater des Bits und Pionier unseres Informationszeitalters. Doch Claude Shannon zeichnete sich nicht nur durch Gedankenschärfe und Einfallsreichtum, sondern auch durch Humor und Originalität aus. Der Begründer der Informationstheorie bastelte in seiner Freizeit an Jonglierrobotern, Schachcomputern und programmierbaren Blechmäusen. Im Institut fuhr er Einrad oder jonglierte mit Keulen. Außerhalb der Fachöffentlichkeit ist Shannon bei weitem nicht so bekannt, wie es seiner Bedeutung angemessen wäre, eine beinahe absurde Tatsache beim Ahnherrn des Informationszeitalters. Das Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn zeigt deshalb in der Ausstellung "Codes und Clowns" vom 6. November 2009 bis 28. Februar 2010 erstmals in Europa eine breite Auswahl von Shannons Erfindungen und Experimenten. Die Ausstellung im HNF will diesen großen Pionier einer breiten Öffentlichkeit präsentieren und neben seinen fachlichen Leistungen auch die Persönlichkeit Claude Shannon würdigen. Die Präsentation ordnet die Erfindungen in die Biografie Shannons und in die Geschichte der Informationstechnik ein und beleuchtet ihre wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhänge und Wirkungen. Die Leihgaben stammen von der Familie Shannon und aus dem MIT Museum in Boston. In diesen Objekten verbinden sich scharfer Verstand und spielerische Fantasie mit handwerklichen Fähigkeiten. Es entstanden pfiffige Dinge, von denen einige technisch revolutionär waren, andere nur Shannons eigenem Vergnügen dienten.
