Sie richtet sich einerseits an Fachleute im Bereich Information und Dokumentation sowie an Arbeitgeberinnen und Personalentwicklerinnen, andererseits an Interessentinnen und Teilnehmerinnen wie auch an Entwicklerinnen von Aus- und Weiterbildungsprogrammen. In einem einführenden Teil werden sowohl die facheinschlägigen Termini erklärt und voneinander abgegrenzt, eine Unterscheidung wie Annäherung an die Bereiche Informations- und Wissensmanagement versucht als auch die Notwendigkeit und der Bedarf an Informationskompetenz in der heutigen Gesellschaft erläutert. Darauf folgt eine differenzierte Darstellung des Berufs des Dokumentars, die leider keine Entsprechung in den anderen Berufsfeldern findet. Stattdessen schließt die Beschreibung der unterschiedlichen Aus- und Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten in Österreich an. Den Abschluss bilden ein Exkurs zu Ausbildungsprogrammen in der Schweiz und eine tabellarische Übersicht zu den österreichischen Angeboten im Bereich Information und Dokumentation mit Verweisen auf die betreffenden Internetauftritte der Anbieter. Der Schwerpunkt der Broschüre liegt auf den einzelnen Beschreibungen der Bildungsangebote, für welche die Herausgeber einheitliche Strukturierungen anstrebten. Diese wurden auf der formalen Ebene großteils erreicht, die Methodik der Kursbeschreibungen weist aber merkliche Unterschiede auf, sodass eine qualitative Gegenüberstellung der Angebote erschwert wird. Mitunter scheint bei der Lektüre die Werbekampagne einer Ausbildungsstätte durch - etwa wenn stolz von "unseren Absolventinnen" und von dem "Genuss vielfältiger Vorteile" für dieselbigen die Rede ist. Hier hätten von Seiten der beiden Herausgeber sowohl eine stärkere Objektivierung als auch eine inhaltliche Angleichung und Harmonisierung stattfinden können. Die Publikation vermag es auf die vorliegende Weise, einen schnellen Einblick in den diversifizierten Arbeitsbereich Information und Dokumentation und seine vielfältigen Einsatzmöglichkeiten zu geben. Somit erfüllt sie ihren eigenen Anspruch als Orientierungshilfe. Das umfassende Angebot an Ausbildungsmöglichkeiten und -stätten ist entsprechend den potenziellen zukünftigen Aufgaben beeindruckend - eine gewisse Undurchsichtigkeit bleibt jedoch aufgrund der oberflächlich gehaltenen Angebotsvergleiche bestehen. Den angehenden und praktizierenden Informationstreibenden bleibt nur, ihre bestehende Informationskompetenz einzusetzen und somit die nützlichen Informationen herauszufiltern, zu vergleichen und für sich zu bewerten. Darin zeigt sich abermals der "Vorsprung durch Informationskompetenz"."
