Abstract

Heutzutage werden neue kontrollierte Vokabularien eher selten erarbeitet. Ihre Bedeutung als unabdingbares Erschließungs- und Rechercheinstrumenten wird aus dem Bewusstsein nicht nur der Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch der Fachwelt verdrängt. Dafür gibt es verschiedene Gründe, unter anderem die Illusion der Vollständigkeit, die nach dem Thesaurus-Boom in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren entstand, und das als eine Art Allheilmittel wahrgenommene Verfahren der Automatischen Indexierung. Für manche Informationssysteme kann eine solche Vernachlässigung verhängnisvolle Konsequenzen nach sich ziehen. Um die Erschließungs- und Recherchequalität auf einem hohen Niveau zu halten, sollte für das jeweilige Informationssystem eine sorgfältige Analyse vorgenommen werden. In diesem Beitrag wird der Entscheidungsweg am praktischen Beispiel skizziert und eine allgemeine Vorgehensweise zur Entscheidungsfindung vorgeschlagen.
