Describes the concept and origins of the expert system and lists its distinctive characteristics and the benefits obtained from expert system use. Briefly discusses the application of expert systems in the following library and information science areas: administration; staff management; planning; technical services; cataloguing; classification; collection development; and reference services. The usefulness of expert systems in library and information systems will depend on the increasing power and efficiency of hardware and software products
