Abstract

Outlines research that led to the development of expert systems and gives some basic definitions of an expert system. Explains the components of an expert system: the knowledge base, the inference engine, the user interface, and the knowledge acquisition module. Discusses the scope for the use of expert systems in the library and information science (LIS) field, noting that the use of expert systems has to be confined to well-circumscribed tasks. Expert systems are available in the fields of reference work, online retrieval, cataloguing and classification, and library management but most work is still in the experimental stage. It is expected that expert systems will find increasing application in special libraries collecting and codifying knowledge within their areas of specialization
