Abstract

Looks at the role which information and referral agencies can play in helping victims of domestic violence. After profiling the typical battered woman and describing the life cycle of domestic violence, discusses measures by which referral workers can help, such as assuring the woman's immediate safety, assisting her in obtaining a restraining order, and directing her to an appropriate shelter or refuge. Examines the operations of shelters in some detail, and makes observations on obtaining help for the batterers themselves. Concludes with details of how referral workers can cope with the internal stresses which working with batterers and battering victimes can create
