Abstract

Discusses the difficulties for librarians and others in accessing information via the Internet and explains the concepts of the protocol and client/server computing. Describes Z39.50, a National Information Standards Organization standard, developed to enable clients to locate and retrieve data from diverse servers. It is maintained by the Library of Congress and is vendor indeoendent. Describes what it does, how it works, and sets out the reasons why it is important, especially to librarians. Understanding Z39.50 is the first step in the process of simplifying the operations of current systems
