Abstract

At the same time that Z39.50 is becoming a mature library protocol for information retrieval, the WWW is booming and presenting itself as a viable alternative to Z39.50. Explains how a simple Z39.50 client server application works and how, with the WWW a comparable functionality can be realised. Notes and discusses the improtant and striking differences between Z39.50 and WWW; the statelessness of HTTP; the complexity of Z39.50 for libraries; the passivity of HTTP; the specialized services of Z39.50 for libraries and the work undertaken at Tilburg University Library, to combine features of both Z39.50 and WWW into their KWIK system; which gives access to bibliographic and text databases
