    Abstract
    Die kostenfrei zugängliche Datenbank »Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke« wurde am 20. August durch die Kommissarische Generaldirektorin der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Barbara Schneider-Kempf, offiziell für die Fachwelt im Internet bereitgestellt. Ausgangspunkt für diese Datenbank ist die seit 1925 im Hiersemann Verlag in Einzelbänden erscheinende Druckversion des »Gesamtkatalogs der Wiegendrucke«, die weltweit sämtliche Drucke des 15. Jahrhunderts in alphabetischer Form nachweist. Der Buchdruck, erfunden durch den Mainzer Johann Gutenberg in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts, breitete sich in den folgenden fünf Jahrzehnten vor allem in Mitteleuropa aus und brachte in dieser Zeit rund 35 000 Ausgaben, die so genannten Wiegendrucke oder Inkunabeln, hervor. Der Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke wird seit fast einhundert Jahren in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin redaktionell bearbeitet. Bisher erschienen zehn Bände, die die Alphabetteile »AH« umfassen. Dieses Material sowie die umfangreiche Materialsammlung der Redaktion, die nunmehr auch den Alphabetteil »I-Z« umfasst, wurden in den letzten Jahren mit Hilfe der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) elektronisch aufbereitet. Die Datenbank enthält unter anderem Angaben zum Umfang, zur Zeilenzahl, zu den Drucktypen sowie teilweise auch die Besitznachweise von Wiegendrucken. Anhand eines Verzeichnisses aller Inkunabeln besitzenden Bibliotheken lassen sich die zum Teil spannenden Wege von Inkunabel-Sammlungen nachvollziehen. Die Suchmaschine ist keine übliche Web-Applikation. Sowohl Server als auch Klient laufen auf einem ApplikationsServer in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Die Datenbank »Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke« ist unter wwwgesamtkatalogder wiegendrucke.dezu erreichen.

    "Königin Elizabeth II. hat den Erfinder des World Wide Web (WWW), Tim Berners-Lee (49), im Buckingham Palast zum Ritter geschlagen. Für seine Verdienste trägt der in den USA lebende Brite seit Freitag den Ehrentitel «Sir». Seine Ideen führten zu den www- Internetadressen. Der die Öffentlichkeit scheuende Computerwissenschaftler arbeitet am renommierten Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) und leitet das 1994 von ihm gegründete WWW-Konsortium, einen Zusammenschluss von Experten, das unter anderem die technischen Standards für das Web setzt. Seinen ersten Computer baute Berners-Lee bereits Mitte der 70er jahre aus einem alten Fernseher. Nach seinem Studienabschluss an der Universität Oxford im Jahr 1976 führte ihn sein Weg über verschiedene britische Firmen an das Europäische Teilchenforschungszentrum CERN bei Genf. Dort legte er den Grundstein für den heute populärsten Teil des Internets: Das World Wide Web. In der Öffentlichkeit blieb der Wissenschaftler nicht zuletzt deshalb weitgehend unbekannt, weil er kein direktes Kapital aus seiner Erfindung schlug. Der verheiratete Vaterzweier Kinder hatte erst im April in Helsinki den neuen mit einer Million Euro dotierten Millennium Technologiepreis erhalten. Berners-Lee ist der erste Träger dieser Auszeichnung für herausragende technologische Leistungen, die das Alltagsleben positiv verändert haben."

    Abstract
    Als Google-Gesellschaftsmitglied muss man nicht mehr leibhaftig zu einer Demonstration gehen, um dabei gewesen zu sein. Man kann auch virtuell teilnehmen. Vom heimischen Schreibtisch aus ist man mit ziemlicher Wahrscheinlichkeit besser über die Geschehnisse vor Ort informiert als diejenigen, die sich im Demonstrationszug befinden. Möglich macht diese Art des Demonstrationserlebnisses das Nachrichtenportal Indymedia, das seit Jahren fester Bestandteil der linken Politszene ist. Es entstand 1999 im Rahmen der Proteste gegen das WTO-Treffen in Seattle. Zum ersten Mal vernetzten sich politische Aktivisten, um über ein zentrales Ereignis zu berichten. Kurze Zeit danach entstanden IMCs (Independent Media Centers) auf der ganzen Welt. Mittlerweile gibt es über 140 lokale IMCs, die zusammen das größte linkspolitische Netzwerk der Welt bilden. Die deutschsprachige Version ging im März 2001 anlässlich der Anti-Castor-Proteste in Gorleben an den Start. Genauso wie die Zahl der lokalen Projekte ansteigt, nimmt auch die Zahl der Indymedia-Nutzer(inne)n zu. Allein die deutschsprachige Seite wird täglich zwischen 15.000- und 20.000-mal besucht. Während großer Aktionen, wie dem G8-Gipfel in Genua, stieg die Zahl der Leser(inne)n nach Angaben von Indymedia auf über 30.000 pro Tag.
