    Abstract
    Dieses Buch ist ein Schlüsselwerk philosophischer Zeitdiagnostik: eine eindringliche Analyse der Selbstzerstörungskräfte der modernen Gesellschaft. Von der Erfahrung ausgehend, daß die aufs äußerste gesteigerte Mittel des wissenschaftlich-technischen Fortschritts in einer verhängnisvollen Eigendynamik sich zu verselbständigen und den Zweck allen Fortschritts: die Selbstverwirklichung des Menschen, zu hintertreiben beginnen, untersucht Horkheimer den unser Zeitalter beherrschenden Begriff von Vernunft. Er verfolgt die geschichtlichen Phasen, in denen die subjektive, instrumentelle Auffassung von Vernunft die Oberhand über die objektive gewinnt, nach der Vernunft, wie in der großen europäischen Philosophie, als eine die Realität prägende, Handlungen und Lebenweise der Menschen bestimmende Kraft galt. Mehr und mehr verliert das moderne Denken die Fähigkeit, neben der Effektivität der Mittel auch die Vernünftigkeit der Zwecke zu beurteilen
