In der Wissensgesellschaft ist das Buch nicht mehr das, was es früher war - die optimale Einehit von Archiv- und Informationsmedium; die Bibliothek ist nicht mehr das, was sie früher war - ein Ort an dem man vorwiegend in Buchform publizierte Druckerzeugnisse sammelt; das Wissensmanagement ist nicht mehr das, was es früher war - menschliches Wissen, das man hauptsächlich in Buchform verwaltet, und die Wissenschaft ist nicht mehr das, was sie früher war - die Domäne einzelner genialer Forscher, die mit Versuch und Irrtum neue Erkenntnisse suchen. Abstract

Während in den USA Schulen und Bibliotheken in einem Atemzug genannt werden, wenn es um Zugangsorte für das Internet geht, scheint in Deutschland die Bedeutung der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken für die Nachfrageförderung und Markterschließung nicht erkannt worden zu sein. Hier verfolgt man einen rein marktwirtschaftlichen Ansatz, der jedoch kaum tragen dürfte. Die im Vergleich zu den USA zu konstatierende Wachstumslücke bei der Ausstattung der Haushalte mit PC und Internet-Zugang beruht nämlich auf einer NAchfrageschwäche, die ihren Grund unter anderem darin hat, daß der Nutzen von elektronischen Informationen erst für den sinnfällig ist, der damit Erfahrungen sammeln konnte
