Abstract

Explores how the national and international information structure currently being proposed in the USA may be built. Considers the technologies that may be involved and the differing views of cable companies, the Internet, policy makers, users, long-distance carriers and phone companies. Discusses the competition between local phone companies and cable companies to give access to the long-distance network and the ATM technology which may bring cable and phone companies even closer together. Describes growing links between the cable companies and online services to provide services. Examines the future of Internet pointing out that it may not continue to have free access and examines the future role of the TCP/IP protocol. Decribes the computer hardware that users will use to avvess the network. Questions whether access to the network will be restricted to the educated and economically privileged
