Abstract

Proposes that the elimination of cataloguing backlogs in libraries is unnecessary if items in the backlog are accessible to library staff and users. Describes a cataloguing backlog project, carried out at the Virginia University Library system, that uses the features of the online catalogue to control and reduce the backlog, increase library user access to uncatalogued items, and train library staff in the creation of online bibliographic records. Contends that cataloguing backlogs, once under control and searchable in an online catalogue, should be considered a normal, non threatening part of the cataloguing workflow and not an evil to be eliminated
