Abstract

Contribution to an issue devoted to minimal-level cataloguing. Paper given as part of the programme 'More with less: minimal-level cataloguing of audiovisual materials' held during the 1990 American Library Asociation annual conference. In 1986, Northwestern University Library began acquiring videorecordings which would support the university's teaching programme. With the expectation of suddenly receiving 600 new videos, saving cataloguing time became a paramount concern. In light of the desire to continue reducing the existing cataloguing backlog, a video cataloguing task force conducted an in-depth study to determine what data on the bibliographic record was necessary. After consultations with staff both in the Catalogue Department and the Media Facility, a modified full level cataloguing record was aggreed. Describes the decision-making process that led to the formulation of a local cataloguing policy that continues to meet the needs of the Northwestern community
