Abstract

Defines and provides a general overview of the concept of authority control. Describes its intellectual and physical components and the various kinds of authorities. Explains why it is an important tool for the achievement of intellectual access to archival the investment: economic; intellectual integrity; retrieval and service to the user; and sharing. Identifies some general requirements of authority control and issues to be addressed and suggests 4 major steps needed to achieve authority control in archives
