Abstract

Peter Watson beschreibt die deutsche Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte vom Ende des Barock bis zur Gegenwart. Eine Zeitspanne, in der sich die politisch zersplitterte »späte Nation« zur Maßstab setzenden intellektuellen Großmacht erhob: Vor 1933 hatte das deutsche Geistesleben einen unangefochtenen Spitzenrang erreicht. Watson zeichnet diese Entwicklung im Detail nach und nimmt neben den Künsten und Geisteswissenschaften ebenbürtig die epochalen Errungenschaften der Naturwissenschaften in den Blick. Er begnügt sich aber nicht mit einer retrospektiven Bestandsaufnahme von Bach über Goethe zu Einstein, sondern zeigt an Köpfen wie Brecht, Adorno, Beuys und Habermas, dass es nach der NS-Katastrophe einen intellektuellen Neubeginn mit internationaler Ausstrahlung gegeben hat.
