Abstract
Virtuelle Forschungsumgebungen gelten als zentrale Unterstützungsstrukturen für die digitale Wissenschaft. Sie ermöglichen den Zugriff auf sowie die kooperative Bearbeitung von Datenund Textbeständen. Oftmals werden sie von Bibliotheken oder Rechenzentren gemeinsam mit Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aufgebaut. In unterschiedlichen Konzepten und Strategieschriften zur Zukunft der Informationsinfrastruktur oder zu E-Science wurde ihre Bedeutung immer wieder hervorgehoben. Jedoch lassen sich auch einige Schwierigkeiten bei der Verbreitung solcher digitaler Strukturen über die verschiedenen Wissenschaftsfelder hinweg beobachten. Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) fördert seit einigen Jahren den Aufbau von Virtuellen Forschungsumgebungen. Im folgenden Beitrag wird erstmals eine Darstellung der bisherigen Förderung vorgenommen.
