Abstract
Im Zusammenhang mit Bibliotheken fällt immer wieder die Bezeichnung "Ort des Wissens". Das Bild findet sich auch in Eigendarstellungen (vgl. etwa Benz, Stefan (1985): "Die Hofbibliothek zu Wien als Ort des Wissens." In: Martin Scheutz (Hg) (2004): Orte des Wissens. Bochum: Winkler.). Doch wird ihr zugeschrieben, ein Ort "des Wissens" zu sein, kommen weitere Kriterien ins Spiel, die es zu erfüllen gilt. Laut dem Anthropologen Marc Augé (1994) "[erfüllt sich] der Ort durch das Wort, durch den andeutungsweisen Austausch einiger Kennworte, im Einverständnis und in der komplizenhaften Intimität der Gesprächspartner." Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, ob und inwiefern die Metapher "Ort des Wissens" auf die Bibliothek angewendet werden kann. Darüber hinaus wird die Frage nach Aufgaben und Funktionen der Bibliothek in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft gestellt. Mittels Begriffsdefinitionen und einem historischen Abriss zu den Ursprüngen und - bisherigen und künftigen- Aufgaben der Bibliothek und ihrer Protagonisten, der Bibliothekare, versucht sich diese Arbeit dem Thema zu nähern. Dabei werden u.a. historische Quellen herangezogen.
