Abstract
Informationelle Städte sind prototypische Regionen der Wissensgesellschaft. In ihnen spielen öffentliche Bibliotheken als Teil der Wissensinfrastruktur dieser Städte eine zentrale Rolle. Für 31 informationelle Weltstädte wurden empirisch die Kerndienstleistungen der Bibliotheken mittels einer Content-Analyse der Bibliotheks-Webseiten untersucht. Hierzu wurde das Bibliotheksangebot in zwei Gruppen unterteilt: 1. die digitale und 2. die physische Bibliothek. Viele Bibliotheken bieten ihren Mitgliedern elektronische Ressourcen zur kostenfreien Nutzung an. Digitale Auskunftsdienste werden hauptsächlich über EMail und Webformulare unterstützt. Ihr Auftritt in Social-Media-Diensten beschränkt sich meist auf Posts in Twitter und Facebook. Nahezu jede untersuchte Bibliothek stellt eine architektonische Sehenswürdigkeit dar. Neben räumlichen Angeboten für Kinder bietet die Bibliothek physische Räume mit Möglichkeiten zum Lernen und Treffen sowie zu einem geringeren Anteil modulare Arbeitsräume. Die weitaus meisten Bibliotheken bieten WLAN in ihren Räumen an, und mehr als die Hälfte arbeitet mit der RFID Technologie. Es gibt zwei zentrale Aspekte für die prototypische Bibliothek der Wissensgesellschaft: 1. (Indikator für die Digitale Bibliothek): Bewohner, Unternehmen und administrative Einheiten in ihrer Region mit digitalen Angeboten versorgen und mit ihren Nutzern via Social Media kommunizieren; 2. (Indikator für die physische Bibliothek): Angebot von physischen Räumen zum Treffen, Lernen und Arbeiten sowie für Kinder (und andere Gemeinschaften) in einem Gebäude, welches eine Sehenswürdigkeit der Stadt darstellt.
