Abstract

Wie stehen Dinge in Zusammenhang? Was ist das Wesentliche an einem Gegenstand in Bezug auf einen anderen? Wie stehen subjektive Bedeutung und generalisierte oder objektivierte Sinnzuschreibung in Wechselbeziehung zueinander? Was bedeutet dies für unsere Selbstwahrnehmung - und wie wir zu Anderen stehen? Was ist Bedeutung und wie entsteht sie? Über solche Fragen rätseln Menschen schon immer. Im Zeitalter digitaler Information, von Mensch/MaschineSchnittstellen und Daten-Robotern, die sich selbständig in den Weiten des elektronischen Datenraums bewegen, gewinnen sie an Relevanz. Proteus, eine frühe Meeresgottheit der griechischen Mythologie, kann die Zukunft voraussagen. Aber sie antwortet nur, wenn es gelingt, sie einzufangen. Und sie verändert stets ihre Form, um das zu verhindern. In einer Zeit der Informationsexplosion reicht es nicht, dass Daten nützlich sind, sondern sie müssen vor allem auch auffindbar und zugänglich sein. Auch wenn es sehr schwierig sein kann, die Differenz zwischen ähnlichen und unähnlichen Objekten zu definieren, so ist dies für Abstraktionen und Ideen noch erheblich schwieriger. Gleichzeitig ist die Suche nach Informationen nicht etwa das Gegenteil davon, sie zu verlieren, sondern die aktive Bemühung, Zusammenhänge in Systemen von Bedeutung zu erschließen. Suche ist ein Akt der Vorstellungskraft, wo sich Ergebnisse in die Zukunft einschreiben.
