Abstract

Eine prägnante Zusammenfassung der geistigen Grundlagen Europas um 630Isidor von Sevilla (um 560 - 636) gilt manchen als der letzte Autor lateinischer Muttersprache. Sein Vorsitz beim 4. Reichskonzil zu Toledo (633) nahm Einfluss auf die spanische Geschichte - doch vor allem erreichte er mit seinem umfangreichen schriftstellerischen Schaffen eineaußergewöhnliche Bedeutung. In seinen Werken, die in über tausend Handschriften überliefert sind, behandelt er naturwissenschaftliche, grammatische, historische und theologische Themen. Das Hauptwerk in der Reihe der naturwissenschaftlichen Schriften sind die fürKönig Sisebut geschriebene Etymologiae in 20 Büchern, die er um 630 abschloss. Das ehrgeizige Ziel dieser nach Themen gegliederten Enzyklopädie war es, die Welt und alle ihre Erscheinungen aus den Namen der Dinge heraus zu erklären. Ergebnis des Werkes war eineprägnante Zusammenfassung der geistigen Grundlagen Europas, nämlich des antiken Erbes sowie der Bibel und der frühen Kirchengeschichte.
