Abstract
Im Sommer 2008 besuchte die Autorin im Rahmen eines Forschungssemesters zahlreiche Hochschulen und Bibliotheken in England. Im Fokus der Studien stan­den bildungs- und hochschulpolitische Perspektiven, d.h. übergreifende, integra­tive Lehr-, Lern- und Bildungskonzepte. Die britischen Hochschulbibliotheken haben bereits seit langer Zeit auf die wesentlich stärkeren Traditionen der praxis- und berufsorientierten Higher Education reagiert. Kundenorientierung und ein klares Bekenntnis zum Qualitätsmanagement führten zu eindrucksvollen Learning Resources Centres, in denen Rechenzentrum, Bibliothek, Medienzentren und ge­samter IT Support konzeptionell integriert sind. Vorbilder sind aber nicht nur in diesen Learning Centres, sondern auch in den aktuellen integrativen Tendenzen historisch traditionsreicher Bibliotheken zu finden. Sie zeigen sich ebenso in den eindrucksvollen "alten", bildungspolitisch starken Öffentlichen Bibliotheken und in den neuen Londoner Idea Stores. Nicht zuletzt ist ein Vergleich der parallelen Entwicklungen in informationswissenschaftlichen Studiengängen von großer Bedeutung für Lehre und Forschung an der Hochschule Darmstadt.
