Abstract

Electronic communication has exacerbated the need for the careful use of language, since the usual approach to retrieval is via words. This places a great strain on the many languages of the world and in particular upon English, which tends to be the most common language of scholarly communication. Use of English as a search tool creates problems for retrieval because usage varies in the different English-speaking parts of the world and the problem increases when non-native speakers have been taught the language and the origin of their usage is unknown. Other problems include those created by political affiliation, by religious or other bias, and by misuse and mis-spelling. Some of these problems are discussed in the paper.
