Abstract

Suchmaschinen sind aus dem Internet nicht mehr wegzudenken. Das Wachstum der Netzinhalte, begünstigt durch die niedrigen kommunikativen Zugangsbarrieren, macht die Selektion relevanter Inhalte, das Trennen des Wichtigen vom Unwichtigen, zur Notwendigkeit. Suchmaschinen übernehmen diese Selektions- und Vermittlungsfunktion an der Schnittstelle zwischen öffentlicher und individueller Kommunikation. Sie ermöglichen in vielen Fällen erst den Zugang zu ansonsten schwer oder gar nicht zugänglichen Informationen und erweitern somit den Horizont der rein menschlichen Suche. Suchmaschinen liefern nicht automatisch die >richtigen< Antworten auf Suchanfragen, sie reduzieren die Komplexität des Webs auf eine überschaubare Zahl von Seiten, von denen aus eine Nutzerin oder ein Nutzer in die Lage versetzt wird, ein für sie bzw. ihn relevantes Ergebnis zu finden. Sie üben somit eine den klassischen Gatekeepern vergleichbare Funktion aus.
