"Die Deutsche Bibliothek hat die bei ihr gespeicherten Online-Dissertationen für die Indexierung durch Suchmaschinen freigegeben. Anbieter entsprechender Suchdienste haben damit die Möglichkeit, den gesamten Inhalt frei zugänglicher Online-Dissertationen automatisch zu erschließen und über Suchmaschinen zugänglich zu machen. Die Digitalisierung von Büchern wird derzeit international diskutiert. Mit dem Angebot der Volltextindexierung im Bereich Online-Dissertationen nutzt Die Deutsche Bibliothek die Möglichkeiten eines Segments ihrer Sammlung, das bereits in elektronischer Form vorliegt. Dabei wird sie die Volltextindexierung zunächst nicht selbst vornehmen, sondern bietet den Betreibern von Suchmaschinen die Möglichkeit dies zu tun. Speicherort der Online-Publikationen bleibt in jedem Fall der Archivserver Der Deutschen Bibliothek. Im Bereich der Suchmaschinenbetreiber werden die aus der Indexierung gewonnenen Suchbegriffe mit einem Link auf den Volltext bei Der Deutschen Bibliothek gespeichert. Zu den ersten Systemen, die das neue Angebot nutzen werden, gehören das Forschungsportal als Projekt des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung und der Internetsuchdienst Google. Weitere Anfragen liegen der Bibliothek vor. Forschende werden in Zukunft die Volltextindexierung der OnlineDissertationen mit unterschiedlichen Zugangswegen nutzen können."
