Abstract
Mit der Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB) steht dem Bibliothekswesen in Deutschland das weltweit größte Nachweissystem für Zeitschriften und andere fortlaufende Sammelwerke zur Verfügung. In den 1970er mit der Zielsetzung begründet, eine überregionale Katalogdatenbank für Zeitschriften zu schaffen, ist die ZDB nach wie vor das einzige bibliothekarische Nachweisinstrument mit nationalem Charakter. Sie enthält Angaben für die Zeitschriftenbestände fast aller wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken Deutschlands und ermöglicht damit den Überblick über den Gesamtbestand (wissenschaftlicher) Zeitschriften, die in diesen Bibliotheken verfügbar sind. Entscheidend ist dabei, dass Zeitschriften aller Materialarten in der ZDB umfassend nachgewiesen sind und damit die Möglichkeit integrierter bruchloser Recherchen gegeben ist.
