Abstract

Can anything general be said about the evolution of mathematical ideas? And if so, can this be brought to bear an major problems in contemporary mathematics? The answer to both of these questions is yes. In this essay I will postulate the existence of a hidden evolutionory constant in the development of mathematical ideas. Formulating this requires an analysis of the notion of 'analogy' and of its role in mathematics.
