Die Dinge sind nicht. wie sie scheinen. Wie in Platons Höhlengleichnis beschrieben, sehen wir Schatten und schließen aus ihnen auf Dinge und Ereignisse der äußeren Welt. Schattenbilder aber sind Trugbilder. Sie zeigen nicht die « Dinge an sich». Wie viel können wir überhaupt über die Gründe unserer Existenz erkennen, was kann unser Gehirn, unser Weltbildapparat «erfassen »? Das Gehirn und seine Funktionsweisen, Bewusstseinsbildung und die Entstehung des Denkens geben der Wissenschaft viele Rätsel auf. Mit zahlreichen Beispielen aus der Geschichte und dem derzeitigen Stand der Neuropsychologie versucht Alfred Meier-Koll das menschliche Bewusstsein, dessen Ausprägungen und Veränderungsmöglichkeiten zu beschreiben.
