Abstract

Wissen spielt im gesellschaftlichen Produktionsprozeß bereits die bei weitem wichtigste Rolle. Es ist die entscheidende Produktivkraft. Es ist dazu bestimmt, sowohl einfache manuelle Arbeit als auch Finanz- und Sachkapital zu subalternen Produktivkräften herabzusetzen. Die gegenwärtige Entwicklung weist auf eine zukünftig mögliche Wissensgesellschaft hin, ist aber noch weit davon entfernt, deren Möglichkeit zu verwirklichen. Was bereits heute viele für eine Wissensgesellschaft halten, welche die Gesetze der kapitalistischen Ökonomie außer Kraft setzt, ist bloß die provisorische Form eines Kapitalismus, der Wissen als Eigentum privater Firmen behandelt und wie Sachkapital verwertet. Zum Übergang in eine Wissensgesellschaft wird es erst kommen können, wenn die Gesellschaft Wissen nicht als Fachwissen behandelt, sondern als Komponente einer Kultur, in der die Entwicklung der menschlichen Fähigkeiten und Beziehungen das entscheidende Ziel ist. Es liegt im Wesen von Wissen, ein gesellschaftliches Gemeingut zu sein, und im Wesen einer Wissensgesellschaft, sich als Kulturgesellschaft zu verstehen. Wissen gehört zur Kultur, ist in sie eingebettet, wirkt auf sie zurück und umgekehrt. Beide entwickeln sich im universellen Austausch und Verkehr. Eine Wissens- oder Kulturgesellschaft erfordert, daß allen der bedingungslose Zugang zum gesamten Wissen sowie die Teilhabe an den wissenschaftlichen und technischen Errungenschaften gesichert ist. "Wissen ist nicht dazu geeignet, als exklusives Eigentum behandelt zu werden" ("is not susceptible to exclusive property"), sagte schon Thomas Jefferson. Der Sinn für und die Pflege von Gemeingut müssen folglich in einer Wissensgesellschaft gegenüber Privateigentum und Warenbeziehungen überwiegen. Ebensowenig wie Wissen ist die Natur dazu geeignet, zum Zweck ihrer Vergeldlichung privatisiert, instrumentalisiert und vergewaltigt zu werden. Wissen darf nicht auf kognitivinstrumentelle technowissenschaftliche Kenntnisse reduziert werden.
