Abstract
Im November 1995 beantragte die spanische: Regierung bei der Unesco, den 23. April zum Welttag des Buches zu erklären. Es sei ein katalanischer Brauch, zum Namenstag des Volksheiligen Sant Jordi Bücher zu verschenken. Nun ist der 23. April also weltweit der höchste Feiertag für Bibliotheken.

"Stets haben Bibliotheken etwas Erhabenes: Schlaue Leute sind schweigend in schlaue Bücher vertieft, um noch schlauer zu werden. Dabei bezeichnete der Grieche mit dem Wort Bibliothek etwas mitunter recht Grobschlächtiges: Bücherregale - sagt zumindest der; Duden, den wir flugs aus der Hand-Bibliothek der Redaktion gezückt haben. Die in Alexandria gegründete Bibliothek des Museion entwickelte sich zur größten Büchersammlung des griechisch-römischen Altertums. Mehrmals wurde die Bibliothek in Brand gesetzt - von Kriegsherren und christlichen Kaisern. Die größten Bibliotheken der Neuzeit stehen in westlichen Metropolen. Frankfurts Deutsche Bibliothek nimmt sich mit 6234 Bänden bescheiden aus gegen die Washingtoner Library of Congress, in deren Archiven 28000 Bücher schlummern. Die größte Sammlung pflegen die Russen in Moskau und St. Petersburg mit 30 000 und 32 000 Bänden. Mathematiker haben mit Bibliotheken ihre Spielchen getrieben. Gelänge es nämlich, eine unendliche Zahl von Buchstaben und Satzzeichen in Buchform herauszubringen, sei das eine allumfassende Bibliothek. Sämtliche bereits erschienene Bücher und künftig noch erscheinende Bücher seien zwischen diesen gigantischen Buchdeckeln zu finden. Freilich sei die Suche nach den entsprechenden Textstellen reichlich kompliziert. Der argentinische Dichter Jorge Luis Borges widmete diesem Problem einen Aufsatz. Da passt ein von ihm überliefertes Lebensmotto ins Bild: "Das Paradies habe ich mir immer als eine Art Bibliothek vorgestellt.""
