Abstract

Offers a definition of electronic/digital libraries (E/DL) as 'products and services to provide online access to information and documents which are stored, published, catalogued and/or quality assured in electronic databases'. They are not necessarily run by libraries. Outlines the Norwegian national policy on E/DL as it affects academic and special libraries, their parent institutions and the closer integration of librarianship with teaching and research. Describes the role of the National Office for Research Documentation. Academic and Special Libraries (RBT) and the use of BIBSYS, the main electronic library system for the academic sector. BIBSYS, has a 1997-2000 programme to make members' digitized collections available online and the University of Bergen is developing Web applications for the BIBSYS database, FORSDOK for researchers to register their work and ultimately to provide links to bibliographic citations and facilities for permission to publish online
