Abstract

"Die Bibliothek von Alexandria steht in Flammen", wird Cäsar in einer Komödie von George Bernard Shaw gemeldt. "Sonst noch was?" antwortet Cäsar kühl, sodass Theodatus entsetzt erwidert: "Was dort verbrennt, ist das Gedächtnis der ganzen Menschheit!" Doch als Antwort erhält er nur: "Ein beschämendes Gedächtnis. Lass es verbrennen!". Das ist eine Antwort, so gar nicht nach dem Geschmack von Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekaren. Aber davon abgesehen: Ist die Bibliothek wirklich das Gedächtnis der Menschheit?
