Abstract

Contrasts the practice of indexing as a technician with that of the professional indexer. A technician knows and can apply some rules, but the professional can, if necessary, devise a new set od rules or otherwise design the appropriate solution to an indexing problem having a knowledge of the theory on which such decisions are made. Discusses suitable training for a professional indexer which would include study of the the processes of knowledge and of the development of the technology available now or in the future to support these processes. Argues that the profession of indexing has a fundamental importance to human endeavour since indexers are experts in the organization of knowledge. Laments the fact that indexers were not ready to meet the challenges of the Internet when it arrived. Suggests ways in which the Australian Society of Indexers can help to raise the status of the profession
