Abstract

Explores the notion of a knowledge society. There are 2 accounts of the knowledge society. 1 is linear, progressive and benign. The other is more disjunctive, transgressive and occasionally regressive. Questions the future of learning in the next century. Considers whether it will bear much resemblance to the critical, creative, liberal, activities traditionally associated with it. Discusses whether new patterns of knowledge production, validation and dissemination are developing that are more democratic and more commercial
