Abstract

Discusses the present situation of videotex in the UK, where it is known as Prestel, and in France, where it is called Minitel, with brief reference also to the USA, Germany and other countries. Notes plans in both the UK and France to introduce systems which may replace it for many users. Argues that despite the noted success of videotex in France, the prospects for its growth generally are not encouraging. Puts this in the context of the shift away from telecommunications monopolies
