Abstract

This article has three goals. It begins by reviewing the current state of the Internet as a data transport system and some of its emerging problems. Then it discusses 2 major research initiatives - Internet 2 and the Next Generation Internet (NGI) program - and some of the new network-level services that may first see substantial deployment in these new research testbeds. The article concludes with a few speculations about future changes to the Internet as a data transport system
