Abstract

Asks whether knowledge management is a new name for what librarians have been doing for years, a major opportunity for librarians to advance within their organizations, or a threat to those who ignore the challenge. The basic elements include accessing, evaluating, managing, organizing, filtering and distributing information in a manner that is useful to end users. It involves blending a company's internal and external information and turning it into actionable knowledge via a technology platform. Librarians need to partner with other units of the organization on a knowledge management team, play a valuable role in the process, and potentially rise in their company's knowledge management hierarchy, as a few librarians already have done
