Abstract
Beim Durchlaufen von Klassifikationsbäumen mit einer gegebenen Zahl von Endknoten sind dann am wenigsten Entscheidungen erforderlich, wenn jeweils 3-er Klassen gebildet werden. 2-er und 4-er-Klassen ergeben den nächstbesten Wert, dann 5-er-Klassen usw. Mathematisch hängt dies damit zusammen, daß 3 die nächste ganze Zahl zu e=2,718... ist. Auch wenn bei jedem Knoten im Durchschnitt nur die Hälfte der Unterklassen geprüft zu werden braucht, liegt das Optimum bei 3. Die Zusammenhänge wurden für verschiedene Fälle und Zahlenbereiche untersucht. Einige andere Aspekte zur Optimierung der Klassengröße werden erörtert, sowie die Implikationen, die sich daraus für effiziente Notationssysteme ergeben
