Abstract

Der Einsatz von Online-Datenbanken für interne Arbeiten wie Erwerbung, Katalogisierung, Leihverkehr und Ausleihverbuchuing ist in den Public Libraries der USA mittlerweile Standard. Die externe Nutzung von Online-Datenbanken für den Reference Service dagegen beschränkte sich bis vor kurzem auf mittelgroße und große Public Libraries, doch können durch die Schaffung von Verbünden neuerdings auch kleinere Public Libraries ihren Benutzern diesen Service anbieten. Die <Handhabungspraxis, die oft im krassen Gegensatz zur Theorie steht, und die Qualität des Online Reference Service sind von Bibliothek zu Bibliothek recht unterschiedlich. Belebendes Element in einem stagnierenden Online-Markt ist die Tatsache, daß mehr und mehr Bibliotheken dazu übergehen, eigene Datenbanken zu produzieren. Die Zukunft von Online-Datenbanken im externen Bereich von Public Libraries ist jedoch ungewiß, angesichts der großen Beliebtheit der CD-ROM bei Bibliothekaren und Benutzern
