Abstract

Visual images and text differ from one another: in the extent to which they resemble their referents; in the kinds of concepts they evoke; in the precision with which they evoke them; in the kind of structures they impose on the information they convey; and in the degree to which that information can be interpreted by perceptual, as opposed to higher level cognitive, processes. Theoretical frameworks have been constructed to summarize and to explain the effects of text-relevant visual media; their ability to attract and direct attention, to represent reality, to provide an organizational context, to clarify, to aid retention, and to help poor readers
