    Abstract
    Die moderne Kultur hat sich mit den Informations- und Computertechnologien erneut Daidalos-Flügel angelegt. Das Buch beschreibt zunächst Entwicklung und Grundlagen dieser Technologien (z.B. programmgesteuerte Computer, KI, wissensbasierte Systeme, Neuronale Netze), untersucht erkenntnistheoretische Fragen computergestützter Mathematik, Natur- und Kulturwissenschaften und entwirft eine Philosophie des Geistes, die den neuen Technologien Rechnung trägt. Philosophie des Geistes, so die These des Buches, geht allerdings nicht in der gegenwärtigen KI-Forschung, Informations- und Kommunikationstheorie, Neurobiologie und Systemtheorie auf, sondern muß der Kern fachübergreifender Forschung und Kulturkritik werden

    Abstract
    Die verschiedenen Methoden und Instrumente des Navigierens bzw. des Information Retrieval im Internet werden anhand von Beispielen im Überblick vorgestellt. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den drei verbreitesten Werkzeugen Gopher, WWW und WAIS. Schwächen un Defizite werden aus der Sicht des Endnutzers analysiert und einige notwendige bzw. wünschenswerte Verbesserungen benannt. Einige Initiativen und Vorschläge zur Weiterentwicklung der Werkzeuge im Netz, teilweise angeregt von einem Blick auf Navigierungs- und Retrievalinstrumente aus Forschung und Entwicklung werden beschrieben

    Abstract
    Das elektronische Medium hat in weiten Bereichen der Informationslandschaft Einzug gehalten und verbreitet sich so rapide, daß bereits von einer zweiten Gutenberg'schen Revolution, einer elektronischen Revolution die Rede ist. Autoren, Verlage, Buchhandel und Agenturen, Bibliotheken und Leser bedienen sich dieses Mediums in steigendem Maße, und die Idee Ted Nelsons von 'Xanadu', einer weltweiten Vernetzung von Hypermedia-Systemen, befindet sich im Stadium der Verwirklichung. Verlage und Bibliotheken sind gefordert, sich der elektronischen Herausforderung zu stellen und angesichts des Wildwuchses an virtuellem Informationsangebot ein neues Rollenverständnis aufzubringen

    Abstract
    Ergebnisse einer Umfrage über die Anwendung des Datenbankprogramms CDS/ISIS in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Von 130 angeschriebenem deutschen ISIS-Lizenznehmern haben 42 geantwortet, die das Programm nicht anwenden und 20, die es anwenden. Deren Verhalten, Gründe für die Nicht-Nutzung und verwirklichte Anwendungen wurden ausführlich untersucht und dargelegt.Auf eine allgemeine Auswertung hin folgt ein Überblick über das ISIS-Anwendungsspektrum mit konkreten Einzeldarstellungen aller Anwender. Im ersten Teil werden Hauptmerkmale und -funktionen des leistingsfähigen Programm beschrieben und bewertet, außerdem Bedeutung und Verbreitung in anderen Ländern kurz vorgestellt
