Abstract

Considers the many advantages of online library catalogues over their cabinet predecessors. Stimulated by an article in the New Yorker which complained about the destruction of the card catalogues of America's great libraries, points out that the Widener library card catalogue at Harvard University is in fact to be retained alongside its electronic successor. Hopes the article will foster more public debate about libraries and librarians
