Abstract

The authors trace the history and development of the name authority and subject work components of the National Coordinate Cataloging Operations (NACO) and characterize the growth of its membership and activity scope, file breadth and size, quality and quantity standards, and governance. Summary statistical tables and lists of all participating libraries with their authority record (National Union Catalog) symbols accompany the text. Also included are reflections on the benefits of participation and speculation on future directions cooperative authority work could take
