Abstract

Affirms the value of adding contents page data for users to make enquiries of library databases. The added data is to reside in files which parallel existing bibliographic data files. Views scanner technology as an easy way to capture data and urges the use of OCR on the basis of retrievability of data and storage efficiency. Acknowledges cost overheads associated with conversion of scanned images to ASCII character formats and while the scanning process is seen as expensive it is also viewed as one in which libraries might cooperate as they have done in the acquisition of other bibliographic data. Sees the supply of contents information by publishers or agencies such as Blackwells as inevitable and desirable and scanning technology as an appropriate technique for retrospective conversion of existing book stock
