Abstract

The association between medical libraries and automated services stretches over a century to John Shaw Billings, director of the Library of the Surgeon-General's office of the US Army. Provides a brief history of IBM's inception and punched cards. Discusses MEDLARS, SUNY biomedical communication network and BRS; developments in electronic medical information; ADONIS and electronic dissemination of full-text journal articles; electronic publishing; the Internet and the SatelLife system for exchanging health care information
