Abstract

When information, even if held on microform, is not adequately indexed or organised, such deficiencies may be alleviated by the material being in human readable form. Documents held in computerised form or stored optically force the searcher to rely on the index and retrieval mechanism. Describes cataloguing, subject classification and indexing. Discusses natural language and controlled language indexing including the International Classification for Standards, consisting of 40 subject groupings of terms each with a decimal-type notation
