Abstract
Most existing databases are inappropriate to art historical research because they were designed with the needs of researchers in the scientific disciplines in mind. Summarises ways in which research in science and art history differ. The aspect of the art work discussed within the document is not consistently apparent from current bibliographic description in available databases. producers of databases for art historians are aware of users frustration and trying to improve the situation by making improvements in the form of stabilisation of terminology and meaning. Proposes a model that helps to explain, by analogy, the function of evidence in the discipline of art history and which might serve as a system for classifying evidence according to its historical and intellectual functions
